2014 MoCo Epic

Sunday was the 2014 MoCo Epic which is part of the MORE Epic Ride Series. Billed as “An Epic Bike Ride in Montgomery County, MD”, the Epic offers up 4 rides covering up to 11 parks linking together some of the sweetest single track in the region.

It was a beautiful day with Fall in the air set against the backdrop of the stunning visual contrast of the vibrant colors of the trees which were just starting to pop.

Terri Spanogle, Marco Demartin, and Tom Howe volunteered to do the early morning, predawn course verification of the various routes. Riding unsupported and with lights, the riders departed the Start/Finish area at the Maryland SoccerPlex shortly after 6a.

Terri drove to AS6 in Seneca Creek State Park at Riffle Road in order to verify the 24.5 miles of The Southern Epic 40 Miler route from AS6 to AS9 at Black Rock Mill.

After completing her course verification, Terri rode the Seneca Ridge Trail (SRT) back to AS6 to finish out her day.

Marco had the most ground to cover on his SS with course verification verifying the first 40.9 miles of The Metric Century 65+ Miler route from the Start/Finish at AS1 through AS6 in Seneca Creek State Park at Riffle Road.

Marco continued on riding the rest of the route and then tacked on a few extra miles for good measure to end his day with 83 miles logged in the saddle.

Tom had the most complicated, but familiar of the course verficiations heading South from the Start/Finish at AS1 to verify The REI 25 Miler and The Southern Epic 40 Miler routes to AS9 at Black Rock Mill. From AS9 he continued to verify the The Southern Epic 40 Miler route to AS6 in Seneca Creek State Park on the SRT. From AS6 he turned around and verified the The Northern Epic 50 Miler route back to AS9 on the SRT. From AS9, he verified the overlapping The REI 25 Miler, The Southern Epic 40 Miler, The Northern Epic 50 Miler, and The Metric Century 65+ Miler routes back to the Start/Finish at AS1.

Once his 25 miles of course verification were completed, Tom rode the The Northern Epic 50 Miler route finishing up his day with 77.5 total miles just in time to partake in the post ride festivities with the live music, great BBQ, and some cold, frosty beverages of New Belgium Brewing‘s finest.

It was another great day to be out with all of our friends just riding our mountain bikes and to partake in a truly “Epic” event by MORE that has given so much back to the mountain bike community and to the trails in Montgomery County. An event like this would not be possible without all the behind the scenes effort it takes to pull this off. Thanks to MORE and all of the sponsors and volunteers for their donations and their countless hours of planning, effort, and sacrifices!
